Gridded ion thrusters use accelerating grids; Hall thrusters use crossed electric and magnetic fields, with magnetized electrons helping sustain the discharge. In both, an electric field accelerates ions. Electrons are also supplied to neutralize the exhaust. Symbols indicate roles, not particle counts, charge densities, field strengths or buildable hardware.
