Fig 1The electric fielddrag a chargeopposite charges attract
charges
Every charge fills the space around it with an electric field, which pushes on any other charge placed there. The lines show the direction of the push on a positive charge: out of positive charges and into negative ones. Where the lines crowd together the field is strong, and where they spread out it is weak. Lines run from one opposite charge to the other, pulling them together, and like charges send their lines away from each other, pushing apart.
