Fig 10Pressure and the hydraulic pressPascal's principlep = F / A
Pressure is force spread over area, p = F/A, in pascals (N/m²). A fluid in a sealed system carries the same pressure everywhere, apart from depth. Push a small piston with 100 N, and a piston with ten times the area feels ten times the force. As with pulleys, the small piston moves ten times further. Car brakes, excavators and the hydraulic jack under a car all work this way. Atmospheric pressure is about 101 kPa: ten tonnes on every square metre.
